A New Paradigm in Mathematics Education

PREFACE
Mathematics education, in its true sense, should go beyond the transmission of
established knowledge. It should inspire curiosity, develop creative thinking, and
empower students to explore ideas independently. This book presents a journey toward
such a transformation; one that redefines how mathematics can be experienced at the
school level.
My work has focused on developing activity-based, humanistic approaches to
mathematics education, where students are encouraged not only to learn concepts but
also to discover patterns, ask questions, and construct their own ideas. These activities
are designed in stages, guiding learners from simple observations to deeper analytical
thinking, ultimately connecting school-level experiences to research-level mathematics.
A key outcome of this approach has been the successful integration of classroom activities
with internationally recognized platforms such as the Online Encyclopedia of Integer
Sequences. The publication of numerous integer sequences arising from these
explorations demonstrates that meaningful school-level activities can lead to genuine
contributions to mathematical knowledge.
Initiatives such as the Geometric Abstract Art Competition, the introduction of the
Gömböc into school-level learning, and the development of innovative problem-solving
approaches reflect a broader vision: to bridge creativity, research, and education. These
efforts aim to cultivate learners who see mathematics not merely as a subject, but as a
field of exploration and discovery.
I would like to express my sincere gratitude to Professor Gábor Domokos for his
collaboration in introducing the Gömböc to our mathematics education initiatives and for
providing a highly valuable endorsement of these innovative approaches to the
development of mathematics education. My appreciation also extends to the Ministry of
Education for recognizing the projects initiated by the Brainstormer Foundation, and
to the editorial board of the On-Line Encyclopedia of Integer Sequences for their
invaluable commitment in reviewing submissions and exploring alternative approaches
to verify new sequences, and to the administration of St. Benedict’s College for their
support in introducing Humanistic Mathematics activity-based projects to the students
of the Brainstormer Maths Club.
The purpose of this book is to present these contributions, share the recognition received,
and highlight a new direction for mathematics education that emphasizes originality,
exploration, and meaningful engagement. It is my sincere hope that this work will inspire
educators and students to move beyond conventional methods and embrace a more
creative, research-oriented approach to mathematics.
